Quick answer

For each example: Completion % = (Progress ÷ Goal) × 100. Remaining % = ((Goal - Progress) ÷ Goal) × 100. Amount left = Goal - Progress.

Formula

  • Always match units
  • Goal must be > 0
  • Cap completion at 100% when reporting after goal is met

Introduction

Examples are how most people learn percent to goal faster than memorizing symbols.

Each scenario below states progress, goal, and all three headline metrics. Numbers are round enough to check on paper.

After reading, open the homepage calculator and type the same pairs to confirm.

For formula notation, see Percent to Goal Formula.

Pattern across every example

Step one: identify progress (current) and goal (target) in the same unit.

Step two: divide progress by goal for completion decimal; multiply by 100.

Step three: subtract progress from goal for the gap; divide gap by goal for remaining decimal; multiply by 100.

Step four: state amount left in raw units for readers who dislike percents alone.

Different industries change the labels, not the division.

Shared math reference

  • Completion = P / G
  • Remaining = (G - P) / G
  • Amount left = G - P

Use these symbols while reading each industry example below.

Work through five scenarios

  1. Savings goal example. Saved $2,400 toward $3,000. Completion = 2400/3000 = 80%. Remaining = 600/3000 = 20%. $600 left.
  2. Sales target example. Closed $55,000 on $100,000 quota. 55% complete, 45% remaining, $45,000 left.
  3. Weight loss goal example. Lost 12 lb toward 20 lb goal (same unit throughout). 60% complete, 40% remaining, 8 lb left.
  4. Study goal example. 45 of 60 sessions done. 75% complete, 25% remaining, 15 sessions left.
  5. Project completion example. 22 of 40 deliverables done. 55% complete, 45% remaining, 18 deliverables left.
  6. Verify in the tool. Enter each pair in the calculator on the homepage and confirm all three outputs.

Fundraising deep dive

A community drive at $8,750 on a $12,500 goal: completion = 8750/12500 = 0.70 → 70%.

Gap = 12,500 - 8,750 = 3,750. Remaining = 3750/12500 = 0.30 → 30%.

A thermometer graphic might show 70% fill; an ops email might lead with “$3,750 to go (30%).”

Both sentences describe the same math with different emphasis.
